Residents and local governments in Douglas County continue to clean up after last month’s flooding.
The water has long receded but the cleanup and repairs from the storm that dumped nearly 10 inches of rain is far from finished. Douglas County Emergency Management Director Keith Kessler says debris from the flood is piling up. “The homeowners in the city of Superior are still cleaning out their basements, there’s still debris that’s being put out on the curbs,” he says.
To assist homeowners, the City is waiving tipping fees at the landfill and residents can arrange for city crews to pick up larger debris.
And, Kessler says damage to infrastructure in the county is still being repaired as well. He says there are a lot of areas still with major road damage. The repairs are estimated to cost around $2 million. “And that’s extremely stressing for a lot of our small townships and it’s also stressful for the City of Superior," he says. "There just aren’t any budget dollars to take care of these unexpected things.”
Kessler says local governments are hoping to get some state transportation and disaster relief money to aid in reconstruction but much of that is tapped out.
